HMH Builders partners with Tree Foundation to reduces its carbon footprint

Sacramento, CA – HMH Builders (HMH), one of the region’s premiere general contractors, has implemented a long-term plan to maintain its position as an environmentally responsible trendsetter. Today, HMH is successfully offsetting the CO2 production of 80% of its fleet of 79 vehicles, and has a strategy to offset its entire fleet by 2013.

“Striving to uphold sustainable practices is important to us as builders,” says president of HMH Dave Higgins, Jr. “As a community-based company, we want to do the right thing for the environment.”

Partnering with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and its Greenprint initiative, which focuses on expanding regional urban forests, HMH has dedicated $10,000 per year, for five years to offset its fleet’s carbon footprint by planting trees.

This annual contribution, which supports planting more than 250 trees during 2008, will offset the 1,154 tons of CO2 produced by HMH’s fleet this year. The offset was calculated by determining a tree’s lifespan (40 years) and establishing how much carbon it will ultimately store over that time (4.6 tons).

“Offsetting our fleet’s CO2 production is just another way we can continuously improve the use of sustainable practices,” says Higgins. “Doing additional things like incorporating hybrid vehicles and organizing Web-based meetings instead of traveling are things every company should consider in this day in age. It just makes sense, and it’s the right thing to do.”

Being environmentally responsible is not a new concept to HMH. During its 50th anniversary in 2007, HMH achieved its goal of reducing its emissions by 15 percent, and is well on its way to doing it again in 2008, and every year thereafter.
